Halifax, Nova Scotia:

Unions representing employees at a number of Nova Scotia universities wish to thank the province and their institutions for taking important steps to protect our members and the public health. Our members are working hard to support our university communities at this difficult time while complying with public health measures and adapting to the significant changes to their working conditions that those measures have made necessary. We wish to remind our employers that it is important to ensure that certain principles remain in place and are rigorously followed:

1. Employers should communicate in a timely fashion with the appropriate unions on all matters affecting their members before new measures are finalized and then communicated.

2. Employers should take all possible measures to ensure the fulfillment of obligations under members’ contracts, including pay.

3. Employers should continue all mechanisms and best practices that ensure accountability and transparency, as well as be mindful of limits on their authority.

4. Employers should establish Letters of Understanding with their unions, as appropriate.
