Halifax – The Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers (ANSUT) is calling on the Cape Breton Board of Governors to reverse its decision to reject the collective agreement agreed to by the Cape Breton University Faculty Association (CBUFA). The Board voted on December 9 to reject the agreement.
“CBUFA asked the Board to ratify the agreement because it is in the best interests of the University,” said Calvin Howley, CBUFA Vice-President. “The Faculty Association entered into this tentative agreement in good faith.” Howley said the Faculty Association ratified the collective agreement on November 3 with 92% of members voting in favour, and had hoped the Board and the Association could work together to help CBU fulfil its academic mission for the sake of the students and of Cape Breton Island.
ANSUT President Marc Lamoureux encourages the Board to continue to work with CBUFA to remove the threat of potential layoffs and to find positive solutions to the issues of job security and take seriously CBUFA’s concerns regarding future vision and academic integrity of the university. “While we hope a strike can be averted, we support CBUFA’s position to exercise this right,” says Lamoureux. “In the event of a strike, ANSUT will provide CBUFA with full support, until a fair and equitable contract is negotiated and agreed to by both parties”.
ANSUT represents over 1,400 full-time faculty, librarians, and contract academic staff in Nova Scotia. ANSUT’s vision is to provide its member Associations with the strongest possible voice on Post-Secondary Education issues in the province of Nova Scotia, and to advance its mission by engaging the active participation of its members, both individually and institutionally, to achieve that end.
